Rivendell is a magical 9.1 acre off-grid retreat with 3 separate buildings. The main house has 2 bedrooms and a full bathroom with on-demand hot water for the shower and a composting toilet. It sleeps 6, in one queen, double futon couch, twin and a small cot. One of the twin beds and the cot are on second floor. The queen is in the bedroom, and the double futon couch is in the living room. The cordwood guest house is just one room which has a King bed that can be converted to two twin beds , a sink, and a composting toilet, and the strawbale studio has a two twin beds, and another composting toilet but no sink. There is a year-round stream at the back of the property, a mix of forest and meadow with walking trails and lots of birds and wildlife. Since it is solar powered, it is important to be mindful of power usage, especially at night. It is very private. The driveway is 700 feet long, but there are helpful neighbors nearby.

Although not too far from the main house, the cottage is secluded with its own spur driveway and parking area. The entire property is 125 Ac in size with 1/2 mile of brook frontage and miles of trails. The private driveway into the property is 1/2 mile long, meandering through woods, stone walls and fields. It is most helpful to us if you let us know the intention of your stay, for example; fishing, hiking, biking, family/school re-union, other family event etc.... It better helps us to prepare for what you might require. It is a very short drive or bike ride to the Adirondack Park and other State land holdings for fabulous outdoor recreational access. Malone Village located 6 miles away, is famous for its architect Trent Jones designed Golf Course with restaurant and our Titus Mt Ski Center is impressive with 27 trails, 2 lodges, tubing, snowboarding and night skiing. Another famous local attraction is the Almanzo Wilder homestead just outside of Malone. We are within 60 minutes from Saranac Lake, an additional 15 minutes to Lake Placid and 30-40 minutes from the Adirondack Visitor Interpretive Center. Potsdam (site of SUNY) and the Village of Massena are located appx 45 minutes to the west. If your taste is more cultural international traveling, we are within 2 hours driving time to both Montreal and Ottawa and less than 1 hour from Cornwall. See info on border crossings at bottom. As mentioned, we are a very short drive or bike ride to the Adirondack Park and other State land holdings for all outdoor recreational activity. A large preserve, Deer River State Forest is only 5 miles away. Here one can mountain bike, swim, hunt & fish. This is the closest large tract of State lands near us over 12,000 Ac. No "rustic" interior in this cottage! Enjoy a master bedroom suite with quality linens, plush bath rugs and Jacuzzi bath. The master bedroom has a queen size bed with full bathroom. The smaller guest bedroom has been converted to an office area but has a comfortable twin size roll away bed if needed for additional guest. This smaller room has its own 1/2 bath (sink and toilet). We have snowshoes for winter guests and 2 kayaks for warm weather guests. One does need a truck, trailer or car roof racks to transport the kayaks. With the exception of a dishwasher, the IKEA kitchen has all modern conveniences and you will find coffee & tea. We do have Dish TV reception and high speed wireless internet connection. There is also internet landline tele account. Air conditioning is not needed in the summer because the cottage stays very cool due to its ceramic tile floors. The long access driveway is well plowed in the winter but one needs a vehicle with good winter traction because the cottage is situated on a knoll. There is a parking area but no garage. We have just under 3 miles of trails and 4 fields. Cross-country skiing is encouraged on the long driveway and fields only because some of the woods trails are very steep. Snow-shoeing is fine anywhere on the property. Hiking is fine anywhere on the property. In the warmer months, the popular brook trail is groomed and well marked for hiking. In the winter, all the trails are marked with colored survey tape which correspond to a printed map. We provide help when needed. Trail maps and more detailed instructions on everything related to the property are in the cottage. I am always interested in helping with finding events and activities and am just an email away. Regs on US/Canadian Border Crossing: Please be aware that a passport or NYS ENHANCED driver's license is needed at the US/Canadian border crossing. If you don t already have a passport and you are a US Citizen AND a NYS Resident, the least expensive form of ID to use is the NYS enhanced driver's license. This can be obtained at a DMV office. There is no need to wait for your license renewal date, you can apply at any time. The NYS Enhanced Driver's License can also be used instead of a passport at other specific land and sea border crossings as well (Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean) so may prove useful for other travel as well. This license does take appx 2 weeks to process so plan ahead! We are located appx 10 miles from the Canadian border. For quick day trips, Deer View Cottage is within a 20-30 minute drive from some of the best fishing, canoeing and kayaking in the Adirondacks on Deer River Flow, Mt View Lake and Horseshoe Pond. A little further south brings you to Lake Meacham Beach and the Osgood River flow. Even further south to Paul Smith's opens up many more bodies of water including Rainbow Lake (w/ numerous small connecting ponds), St. Regis Lake, Osgood Pond and more.

Beth's Place also has a lovely full bath with towels, wash clothes, and your basic toiletries, a completely private entrance and ample parking. We can also set up two twin size beds so we accommodate 6 people pretty comfortably. There is also a washer and dryer right in the unit for our guest to use. Our guest will have two private outside spaces all to themselves. One out front facing the putting green and one outback with a grill and hot tub and river view. The igloo is out back as well. Please note, the igloo is shared with our other unit. We have another bed and breakfast on our property if you were looking for different dates or to accommodate more people. He is usually very quiet but does occasionally bark for a moment to let us know that someone has arrived. Our property is pretty nice too! You can follow our trail right down to the Raquette river where you will find a row boat, kayaks and fire pit to enjoy. Kayaking is only available until mid Nov or so depending on the weather. We cover the putting green for the winter once it starts to snow.

Before Covid-19 our goal was to sweat the details, so you wouldn't need so to have an awesome experience while visiting our area but how things have changed and we have responded to make sure your safety is our priority. We have installed UVC lighting in our HVAC duct for the safety of everyone entering the Elliott House. Although, the Center for Disease Control, CDC, has said its "unknown" if UVC lighting kills Covid-19, it states that it "probably does" since it is known to kill other Corona viruses as well as bacteria and mold that can make us sick. We are committed to the safety of everyone that enters our home and defeating this dreadful virus so we may continue life as we once known it to be. _____________________________________________________________________________ The Elliott House was built in 1864 and sits on 5 acres of well-manicured lawn, flower beds and towering maple trees, yet only minutes away from the local universities and town beach and parks. The house is surrounded by beautiful meadows and is only 4 miles away from the beautiful St. Lawrence River, that borders the U.S and Canada. All bedrooms are generously equipped with luxurious bedding with access to wireless high-speed internet and they all come standard with a healthy dose of historical charm, not to mention the ample views of wildlife in the fields. Although the Elliott House is 154 years old, it has been greatly updated to maximize your comfort while at the same time preserving a lot of the history and charms that will make you want to return again and again, like many of our past guests. It has been said to me that our pictures posted don't do us justice. The house has central air that cools the entire house and has a whole home filtration system so you can drink the water from the well and wash your clothes without worrying of staining them from mineral content found in some country homes. We also have bottled water delivered for your comfort. Our Vacation home is unique in that its initial purpose is to be our vacation home and when we remodeled the house, higher grade material and craftsmanship was used to give us the level of comfort we personally come to expect whether we are at our home in Pennsylvania or here in Madrid, NY. With our level of comfort will come the piece of mind you will have knowing your stay will be a good one and hope you will return again. When you rent our home you will be the only people occupying it. There may be things in the cupboards and fridge, for experienced renters, might find odd, such as brownie mix etc, but feel free to use what is there. The Elliott House is great for families that like to make meals and spend time with their family. The kitchen was completely remolded in 2020 with Amish made Cherry cabinets, stainless steel appliances, and big new windows to allow the sun to come in. The kitchen comes stocked with everything you need to make meals and memories. When you first open the door and see the 8 ft ceilings and beautiful hardwood floors that sweep pass the 7 ft double doors into the living room it's like stepping back in time. The living room has plenty of sitting area where you can congregate and watch TV or take in family time. The kitchen has all the utensils to cook a family dinner and a large dining room table where a good dinner and family can visit in comfort. The patio at the rear of the house is a great place to start and end your day while at the same time view the deer and turkeys that WILL show up during your stay. I love the mature Maples and the shade they make. Plan your perfect day trip to Lake Placid, Ottawa, or Montreal is only a short drive away. The Universities, Clarkson, St.Lawrence, SUNY Canton and SUNY Potsdam are only a stones throw away from the Elliott House. One thing my wife and I like to do is take a 20 minute drive to Heuvelton, which is an Amish community and enjoy the day shopping their roadside stands. I call it the Amish experience. You will find eggs, jams, vegetables, soaps, bread of all kinds, as well as various crafts. If you are looking for something custom made such as cabinets and furniture, they will take your order. We love Heuvelton and urge you not to miss this experience. I guess I really didn't know what I had until I shared the area and the Elliott House with our friends and it started to sink in that not many people have experienced living in a country home, fishing on the St. Lawrence and playing in the fields. I heard my 10 year old neighbor boy say to his parents "this was the best vacation, ever." We truly want you to enjoy your stay and have a great experience visiting northern N.Y. Jim was a surveyor for the Gas company and Jesse was a housewife raising two girls. I always remembered how Jesse labored over her flower beds and had one of the best manicured yards in the North Country. No matter the growing season, you could always find a flower bed in full bloom...I always enjoyed the Lilac bushes.
